Sarcosuchus Castle – a true story

The giant crocodile guards the mote. I take comfort in that.

Still, I have been betrayed by the two youngsters.

Only moments before I, the former queen, had taken the royal noodle and knighted them. I addressed them formally, calling them “Sirs”, then watched as they leaped into the concrete pool, both with smiles on their young faces.

Pleased to have done my duty by making two boys happy, I settled upon my noodle horse.

“It’s a great stallion,” I said, peddling my legs in the water.

Sir Paddy, the younger one of only 5 years, scoffed. He threw an invisible something my direction.

“Now,” he said. “You are riding a snail.”

The nerve of that rascal!

“How could you?” I demanded.

Laughter.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, Sir Paddy wasn’t finished with me yet. “Whoosh. And you are now a chicken.”

How quickly one can be thrown from greatness into insignificance.

I bwok, bwoked in a pitiful and timid display as I tread the water at a snails pace.

Seven- year-old Sir Russ (the one who taught me what a sarcosuchus was in the first place) had another idea. Poof. “You are now a dragon chicken.”

Things were looking up.

I flew off my snail, flapped my wings with enough force to swell the pool. My bwoks roared. Fire erupted from my beak with enough heat to put the ninety-seven degree Texas heat to shame.

Quickly, before the two tricksters had any more ideas, I flapped out of the pool toward my water bottle and for a bit of respite.

Because, occasionally, grandmother dragon chickens need their rest.

INSPIRATION AND MY IM-PERFECT-TION

If you study the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, will you become a better person? (inspiration from Tony Burgess Blog and JohnCOYOTE blog)

If you bring your experiences to the surface, can you be a better actor? (inspired by RIVRVLOGR blog)

If you study another human being, the way they walk, the sparkle in their eyes, will you like what you see? (inspired by fauxcroft)

If we force ourselves to unchain our words, will be become better writers? (inspired by Scribbled to Paper)

If you want to understand colors and shading, can you watch a tutorial for inspiration and create something beautiful? In this case, yes. (inspired by Stoneronarollercoaster)

If you study your image in that reflected glass, do you like what you see? (inspired by Lifelessons)

And, how I could go on with how you all, dear bloggers, inspire me.

I did not study up on how to be a grandmother.

But being one has inspired a new creativity inside my very core.

Back in Bad Ass Grandma’s hometown …

girl smiling… her granddaughter smiles. “Mom, when will Bad Ass Grandma come back from her vacation?”

“What’s so funny?”

“Thinking about what she did. She lifted one leg over something I couldn’t see then ran round and round while bouncing up and down.”

“Why …”

“She sang,

Round and round up and down

on the carousel horses.

Up and down, round and round

as the music plays.

The lights on top they shine so bright

as we go round and round

use your hands to hold on tight

as we go up and down.’

Then she sang it over and over again.”

“Yes, your grandmother is quite extravagant with her imagination. Was she still wearing a pony tail?”

Granddaughter laughed and trotted back to her room, saying, “I hope she’ll be home soon. She promised me the moon.”

When Craving Attacks

What do you do if you love fabric but can’t sew, want to paint but don’t feel like bringing out the oils and a large canvas?

I created this piece, “Books on the Beach,” for my granddaughter. I made these tiny books 3-D so she could actually look inside. The fabric in the clothes basket is real. Best part? I got both paint and glue on my hands! Yah!

Here’s a better view of the 3-D books:

Grandma’s Slice of Idiom Advice

If you can’t get back on the horse

– -well, you can, of course

If you can’t find your way home

you’re not alone

If you can’t lead the horse to water

then, dear granddaughter,

forget about the nag.

‘Cause if you can’t get to the cookie,

eat through the bag!

and if you bite off more than you can chew

don’t worry, you’ll pull through

Let sleeping dogs lie

and you’ll be fine

‘Cause your guess is as good as mine.

The “Feeling” of Flavor

Flavorful is not the chip in front of me.

fullsizeoutput_26c2

It is seeing the knowledge in my great-grandmother’s eyes as she looks down

IMG_1194

It is the power of her fingers holding up my whole arm

fullsizeoutput_26c7

It is knowing that, in touching her hand, I feel a lifetime of experiences

fullsizeoutput_26c5

It is the insightfulness I discover when she speaks to me

fullsizeoutput_26cb

It is the feel of a tongue that speaks words of wisdom

fullsizeoutput_26cd

Flavorful is the kiss from her lips that says, “I love you.”

Compared to these things, the chip has no flavor at all.

Who’s teaching who on this vacation?

Today, little one, we will teach you about the ocean.

About the dolphins jumping freely in front of you.

About the feel of sand between your tiny toes.

We will teach you how to dig in the sand without eating it

and how to wait for the cool water’s tide to  cover your feet.

But, no doubt, you will teach us more.

When Life becomes Real

My daughter introduced my granddaughter to life outside of a song or a book.

My wee one knows that a cow says “moo.” So …

Now, she’s met a cow.

He stays silent. He doesn’t moo.

What’s wrong with these grownups? Do they just make crap up so we can repeat what they say?

<shrug> If you lead a horse to water, you can’t make him thirsty. 🙂

Yes, You Can!

I received the printed children’s book I wrote from Mixbook and I’m so happy with it. Mixbook.com does a great job with the printing and they make it easy to create. And, I have a blast finding the art work. Best thing? My granddaughter loves it! 🙂
