Is my brain nutty-fied?

To help myself get to sleep, I’ve discovered this trick. I close my eyeballs and “stare” at the back of my eyelids looking for shapes — usually they’re faces. As my brain relaxes, I focus on other images that pop into my semi-consciousness. This one happened the other night so I had to photoshop it so I could show you.

Yes, that’s right. I saw an image of Barny Fife (The Andy Griffith Show) with banana bike handlebars coming out of his head. Geez!

Why, oh why, of all things, this?!

Then it came to me. Earlier in the day I had watched part of an old movie staring Andy Griffith. And, I’ve been contemplating riding my bike again. But my bike isn’t of the banana variety nor does it have streamers on the handles.

What’s one to do?

She “took a knee” and …

Unknown-1

I once knew a girl named Strict Janet

the Moonshine Still, she ran it

one sip of her “tea”

at once took a knee

and she kicked me off the “free” planet

Dammit!

Yet She Rose

images

She believed in something greater

no concern for self or rules

nothing would abate her

as she fought for open schools.

She spoke of female rights,

opportunities, a claim

for education she would fight

but then, they learned her name.

On a dusty bus they found her

where she spotted weapon drawn

and everyone around her

thought the shot, her final song.

An unexpected outcome passed

forgotten sorrowed woes

as people of the world, aghast

Witnessed as she rose.

Yes, we watched her as she rose.

I Much Prefer the Elephant

Unknown

To think another irrelevant

are thoughts from someone arrogant

slow in their development

lacking in their etiquette

don’t let them set a precedent

of how others should be treated.

I much prefer the elephant

obviously more intelligent

and not nearly as conceited!

Stone Decisions

Find the stones of memories

along the creek’s sloped reed

Stack them in a Babel tower

for communication’s need?

Or place them in protected pouch

away from murky pond

And carry them with lightness, grace,

and lovingly beyond.

Empty Lies a Crowded Room

5981761296_85bdfccb1f_b-1

Twas’ too soon for me to go

an empty vessel still in tow

the darkness loomed, but glowed, that room

the crowd all dapper-dressed.

The iron box of elevation

took us to that destination

the couple smiles, no hesitation

“Congrats on baby quest.”

“Guess it’s not to be,” repeated

words I’d learn, still felt defeated

empty arms I had conceded

A promised heart betrayed of grants

Glasses clinking, lighting winking

champagne fountains made for drinking

my soul betrayed continued sinking

yet how the people danced.

Oh, how those people danced.
