Through the frosted window,
the darkness settle in,
a woman ‘neath a lamppost turned her
head and dipped her chin.
Had I known her better
I might have lift a hand
to tilt her face toward the light
and give her hope again.
And when she turned and strolled away,
shoulders slumped, deflated,
I slouched behind that window pane
and wondered why I’d waited.
