I don’t want to cut my fu..king ear off like Van Gogh.
Instead, I spit on creativity when I can’t sleep. (Not really. I love creativity)
How do you bloggers and authors, when your cozy and warm in your bed, stop thinking about what to write next when all you really want is to sleep?
I close my eyes and my mind keeps formulating words, plot points, better dialogue, better descriptions, an idea for a new novel. And now that I’m blogging? ASS is getting worse.
Those of you, like me, with ASS (Author Sleepless Syndrome) what do you do?
This never really happened to me.I love sleeping, nothing can come between us😁

I love sleeping too. Once I get to sleep, I’m fine. It’s just turning off my brain that’s the problem. 🙂

I have ASS and chronic pain so the chances of sleep-filled nights are pretty slim! Seriously, I always thought it was the pain keeping me awake and I was just thinking of things to distract myself from it. Hmm, maybe it is the other way around? Either way, ya I would love to lay my head on my pillow and wake up 8 restful hours later! Good post!

This happen with me. Like i love animation and start blogging few days back. Some time i feel like i didn’t sleep. My mind was working while my body was in rest. That make me more tiered.

I do one of two things. Get up and speed write all my ideas down, or imagine one of my characters falling asleep in a hammock in Mexico, which I had the pleasure of doing while travelling. . .

What a great idea, Barry! I’ll try that but I can imagine myself staying awake thinking of what character to put in that hammock! 🙂

Since I primarily write political commentary these days, I am plagued by thoughts bouncing around in my head day and night. Sleeping more than 1-2 hours at a time anymore is rare. How do I turn it off? I don’t really. A glass of wine at bedtime helps, and sometimes I can picture a lovely log cabin in the Smoky Mountains with a creek … and a Black Lab named Harrison Ford … and it helps, but as soon as I doze, BOING … some errant thought returns to torment me! So no, there is no cure … 😀

Hahaha! “Poor Basilia!” Lost when it comes to what you call it? Acronyms? I am lost but! This time? It just cracked me up! You are clever. ha ha ha! You made your ASS point! lol

Yeah, I stayed awake until I found a good acronym. 🙂

O me! In re-reading my comment? It just does not sound right. Did not think of the sound, only of the meaning of ASS (Authors Sleeping Syndrome: )that it took me until you spelled it out for me to brighten up. ‘Poor Basilia’. . 🙂

I don’t find that to be a problem anymore. My memory was affected by my stroke. My problem is remembering to do any of it!!!

I’ll try to remember to sleep. 🙂

You assume too much….while many do sleep all safe and warm in their beds…..many many many more; can hardly sleep at all. That is when, what I call, insomniac creativity takes its toll. ~~dru~~

True that. Sometimes I get my best ideas when I’m in that “in between” state. Of course, then I have to jump up and write it down before I forget. 🙂

Getting to sleep…easy, no sweat. It’s that waking up in the middle of the night when the “fresh” brain cells get active. Love the title. ☺

I have had this problem, too! It’s brutal!
The thing that helped me the most was cutting all caffeine out of my life. Drastic, I know. I thought I could not function without my coffee and chocolate. But a couple of years ago I got so sick that I could not tolerate anything on my stomach, other than cold water. After two or three days of nothing but water, when the miserable caffeine withdrawal headache finally went away, I felt so calm, so peaceful, so…. awesome!!! I have been able to fall asleep and stay asleep very easily, ever since.
So now I only drink decaf Earl Grey and stimulant-free herbal teas. I love chocolate and I love a good strong cup of coffee, but I love peace and happiness and sound, unbroken sleep, even more.
The other thing that helps me a lot is snuggling with our two rescue dogs. Our fiesty little poodle boy and our sweet big boxer girl love to cuddle.
I found you through OM. Good luck, and sweet dreams. 🙂

Thanks, Linda. I only drink one glass of iced coffee in the morning. But seriously, I need to get my ASS out and exercise more!

Oh, yes, exercise helps a lot, too. I forgot to add that.
This is another way that caring for rescue dogs comes in handy. I am a great-grandma in my sixties, but everyone thinks I am much younger. The one to two miles that I walk most days with our fur babies probably has something to do with that.

My mind is constantly on coffee mode or ADHD.. I try and sleep, but when I can, I usually use my mac’s sticky notes to remind me.

Yep, I have the paper kind of sticky notes all over my house. Hate to admit this to everyone but if I’m in bed, I actually text myself. And boy, do I respond fast with the reminder. 🙂

My only remedy for ASS is to have a pad and pen on my beside table. I quickly jot down some key word(s) to help me remember my brilliant thought. Knowing there is a clue, I can often relax and go back to sleep. Sometimes what I scribbled in the dark is actually legible, and occasionally it even makes sense! So I don’t have to kick myself in the a– (have you ever tried that? Very awkward) for either not saving my midnight maundering, or for losing hours of sleep for what turned out to be something that was ultimately rejected in the harsh light of the computer screen. Cheers.

LOL! Great advice. Maybe when I’m trying to fall asleep I’ll picture ways to kick myself in the ass. Then, I won’t have to get up and write anything!

A pad and pen by your bed helps me. This saves me from getting out of bed which I hate doing! It’s hard to be an ASS!!!

One thing I have noticed is that once you are immersed in writing, day and night become like one long mixed slur.
I don’t really have a solution for you, but I encountered this excellent health guide blog with a nice chart teaching us how to synchronize our schedule with our body clock. Basically melatonin production starts at 21:00 and ends at 7:30, and you are most alert and active between 10:00 and 17:00. So maybe you could try and sleep at 21:00/22:00 and let the melatonin do the work. Melatonin secretion starts when our body senses less light, and blue light causes alertness. Thus, stay away from blue light at lease 3 hours before sleep time. My suggestion would be to rely on lamp light and turn off the tablet/pc at 19:30 and just listen to music and relax.

I function better when challenged in travel. I love to travel, sometimes even to arrive. My last ‘straight eight ‘ was after a 670 mile day last week to visit my son in Colorado. I go into what I call ‘absorb mode,’ a kind of now thing when here. I notice and resist roadsides while steady in the zone of survival driving. Dreams run steady throughout the night but that is pretty much always. Sleep is definitely the pay off.

I keep pen and paper by the bed. If I have ideas, I write them down. Then, I don’t have to play them on repeat all night so I don’t forget it.
